IV SCIENCE DAY

Science students in grade 9, who had chosen to make Practical Final Diplomawork , held a Science Day on May 24, 2011 for primary school students. It was the fourth time that science day was held. The theme was "Humans and Technology". Our guests were students from Östersundom primary school, grade6.
Science day began with presentations about "Secrets behind the blood" by Miro Knuutinen, "What reveals the urine?" by Nico Knuutinen, "A robot - what is it?" by Oscar Olin and Matias Miller and "Who Needs Science?" by Ingvar Stål.
After the presentations students were divided into groups and we began with workshops.Primary school students determined blood groups, tested urine content and learned to identify drugs, and eventually built three robots with different characteristics. Each group of students "taught" the robots different things - listen to command, to recognize different objects and follow a certain pattern.
Everyone was happy and satisfied, and came to the same conclusion - science day was successful.
You can find pictures from the Science Day here .

Teachers from Norway will visit us on 05.04.2011 in order to familiarize with Science teaching in our school.

Teachers from Raseborg town will visit us on 01.04.2011 in order to familiarize with Science teaching in our school.

SCIENCE DAY IN BORGÅ

Botby Science students, who have been on the Work Experience Program, made the 11/11/2010 a visit to Lyceiparkens skola in Borgå to discuss with the school's grade 7 students about Science ("Discovery and Technology"), due to that the talented and curious teachers Patricia Nevanko and
Mikaela Gustafsson want to offer Science as an optional subject for their students.Botby students told about their studies in Science ("Discovery and Technology"), why they chose Science, how their interests in Science developed and told which scientific areas they are the most interested in. We formed six groups to organize activities for Lyceiparkens students.

Michelle Riska and Alexandra Kuhlefelt talked about the fascinating world of organic chemistry and prepared labs about esters.

Filemon Wolfram talked about how cigarettes affect the lungs and using a cleverly designed apparatus, he displayed the content of tobacco and identified harmful substances through chemical reactions. Filemon had a very good assistant - Onni Lundin.

Daniel Alperi talked about electrolysis and showed how you can clean various metal objects and build electric batteries using fruits and humans.

Miro Knuutinen talked about criminology and showed how to determine blood groups and the Rhesus factor.

Otto Fazer talked about the fascinating world of electric charges and lightning in the nature. He showed how to use electric charges in everyday life.

Matias Miller and Oscar Olin talked about robots and showed three perfectly functioning robots.

After dinner, Ingvar Stål talked about the fascinating world of Science and explained what a scientific theory is. He talked about the Big Bang and Evolution theories.

We were very happy with our trip and same time tired, too.

We want to thank Lyceiparkens skola's teachers Patricia Nevanko and Mikaela Gustafsson for their help in planning and organizing the wonderful day!

We will have guests the 16:th and 17:th of September due to a training for teachers in "Science as a an optional subject in junior high school". The training is organised by Ingvar Stål in Resource Center (www.skolresurs.fi)

Science students grade 8 Matias Miller and Oscar Olin, the leaders of the joint project "How X-RAYS affects plants development", visited 12.04.2010-17.04.2010 Vesterledenskole in Herning, Denmark in order to conclude their international investigation. In Herning Matias and Oscar summarized all countries results in a presentation. The presentations conclusions raised many question among the audience and was lively discussed. Everyone agreed that the cooperation and the investigation had succeeded. We thank the Swedish Technical Academy in Finland for their support.

Their presentation is found here and pictures

Science student (SC1) Michelle Riska was awarded a diploma and a prize of 100€ due to her essay on "The Universe" (available in Swedish).

Glodez Natasa, teacher from Slovenia will visit us on 24 - 26.03 2010 in order to familiarize with Science teaching in our school.
